Founder and Director of The Last Hurdle

I have worked in sales and marketing for more than 25 years, exploring both sides of the business development coin: helping people find a business and helping that business turn interest into customers.

I founded The Last Hurdle in June 2011. Today, I work with businesses to understand what their marketing needs to achieve, where it is falling short and what would make it more effective.

That work takes me across websites, content, search and social media. It also involves plenty of questions. What does the customer need to understand? What might be stopping them from taking the next step? Is the activity we are planning actually helping the business?

Curiosity, code and a slightly ridiculous first website

I built my first website in Dreamweaver in 2001. It was one page. By today’s standards, it looked ridiculous. At the time, it was my crowning achievement.

I am self-taught in website development, and exploring, questioning and analysing are still a big part of how I learn and work. My earlier background in electronics engineering also gave me plenty of opportunity to explore how things work and how the different parts fit together.

I particularly enjoy the technical side of websites: how they function, how people use them and how they are found. Search engine optimisation (SEO) and answer engine optimisation (AEO) bring those interests together, helping businesses make their information easier to discover through search engines and AI tools.

I also enjoy translating intimidating numbers into something useful. A Semrush report can present you with a lot of data, but the value comes from understanding what it means for your business, where it points to areas for development and what deserves attention first.

A tendency to spot gaps

I am embarrassingly good at spotting gaps and opportunities. Once I notice a missing connection, I tend to want to understand it.

If you read my articles, you will probably notice that I talk about gaps quite a lot. Gaps between being found and being chosen. Between attracting visitors and generating enquiries. Between doing more marketing and understanding whether it is helping.

Those questions come from practical work with businesses. They are also the thinking behind our Marketing Clarity series, where I explore how clearer messaging, customer journeys, trust and meaningful measurement connect.

I like getting underneath a problem, finding the missing connection and making the explanation useful to the person who needs it.

I write as I work: with questions, practical explanations and the occasional raised eyebrow. My aim is to help you understand your marketing well enough to make more confident decisions about it.
