Focus on the Solution

Ever had one of those problems that seemed insurmountable? The kind that you just kept dwelling on? It’s all too easy to fixate on the problem itself, rather than focusing on the solution.

Worrying about the issue won’t get you any closer to resolving it. In fact, it only drains your energy—energy that could be better spent elsewhere. So, how can you stop worrying and start acting?

First Step: Face the Worst Outcome

Consider the worst possible outcome of the situation and prepare for it. Once you’ve done that, anything better will feel like a bonus. To move forward, gather as many facts as possible and go through these four questions:

  1. What specifically is the problem?
It’s surprising how often, when we try to define an issue clearly, it shrinks in size or becomes more manageable.
  2. What are the causes of the problem?
Get to the root causes, not just the surface-level issues. Clarity here can significantly impact the way you address the situation.
  3. What are the different solutions I/we could implement?
Write down all potential solutions. This process helps crystallise your thoughts and brings some structure to the situation.
  4. Which of these is the best solution?
One of the solutions you’ve listed is likely to stand out—either because the facts point you in that direction, or because your gut instinct tells you it’s the right move.

Focus on the Solution

Once you’ve worked through these questions and identified the best solution—act! Begin implementing it immediately, even if it’s just taking a small first step. By doing so, you shift your focus away from the problem and towards the solution. Not only that, but most of the worry and anxiety will begin to fade as you take positive action to resolve the issue.

So, if you find yourself stuck, procrastinating or worrying about a problem, gather the facts, go through these four questions and start putting a solution into practice. When you focus on the solution, that perceived roadblock will disappear, allowing you to drive your business forward.
